Fare Types & Cost
KAT offers many different types of fares, from single-ride passes to 30-day unlimited ride passes. View the Fare Descriptions below for details about the different options we have to offer visitors and locals.
Children ages 4 and under may ride for free. Knox County Schools students also ride for free through the Youth Freedom Pass Program.
Note: *KAT offers discounted semester passes through various colleges and trade schools. To find out if your school participates, visit the Semester Pass Program page.
Fare Descriptions
One Ride
$1.00 ($.50 discounted fare) – Good for a single, one-way trip on any fixed route bus. One ride passes can be purchased on the bus, at the Knoxville Station Customer Service Counter or by mail.
1 Day Pass
The $2 pass ($1 for seniors 65 and older, persons with disabilities, and students age 18 and under with proper ID) provides unlimited rides all day on all bus routes. These can be purchased on the bus with cash only (having exact amounts is recommended).
30 Day Pass
$30 ($15 discounted fare) – Good for unlimited rides for 30 consecutive days beginning the day the pass is first used. 30 day passes can be purchased at the Knoxville Station Customer Service Counter or by mail.
20 Ride Pass
$15 ($7.50 discounted fare) – Good for twenty single (one-way) trips on any regular, fixed route bus. 20 Ride passes can be purchased at the Knoxville Station Customer Service Counter or by mail.

Pay cash or card at the Customer Service Counter at Knoxville Station for any of our passes.
Pay by mail. Fill out the Order Your Passes by Mail (PDF) form and mail it to the address on the form along with payment (make your check or money order payable to KAT. DO NOT SEND CASH).
Discounted Fare Program
A discounted fare is available to those who qualify. Proper identification (Medicare card or a valid KAT I.D. card) is required before boarding.
Qualifying individuals include:
- Individuals receiving funds from Social Security
- Seniors age 65 or over
- Medicare card holders
- Persons with disabilities, including disabled Veterans
- College Students attending one of our partner universities or colleges participating in the Semester Pass program
- Students in Knox County Schools grades K-12
- Currently, all Knox County Schools students may ride for FREE with the Youth Freedom Pass program
To apply for the discounted fare program, please download, complete, and return the Discounted Fare Application (PDF) to the Knoxville Station Customer Service Counter at 301 Church Avenue Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. KAT will charge a $2 processing fee for all IDs. You can complete the Discounted Fare Application form online as well.
Smart Trips: Discount Offers
If you are a transit passenger and haven’t discovered Smart Trips, it’s high time you checked them out! Smart Trips offers discounts for using alternative transportation instead of driving. So, if you use the bus every day for work, errands, or even Saturday shopping, Smart Trips will reward you with prizes like restaurant coupons, retailer discounts, and tickets to shows and attractions.
