JOB DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for supporting the development and delivery of safety and training programs that promote safe, reliable transit operations. This position assists with employee onboarding, training delivery, safety observations, documentation, and compliance support. The Safety & Training Coordinator works closely with the Safety & Training Manager and operational departments to ensure training activities, safety practices, and reporting processes are carried out effectively.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Training and Development (40%):

• Deliver new‑hire orientation programs for Operators, Maintenance/Service, and Administrative employees.
• Assist employees preparing for Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) testing, including classroom instruction and behind‑the‑wheel practice under supervision.
• Maintain and update standardized training materials to ensure consistency across trainers.
• Reinforce customer service expectations throughout all training activities.
• Guide new hires through required systems and tools (e.g., Galls Portal, Payroll Portal, Employee Intranet).
• Provide OSHA and other required safety training as directed by the Safety & Training Manager.
• Track trainee progress, conduct evaluations, and provide timely feedback to the Manager.
• Conduct refresher training on policies, procedures, and operational changes.
• Collect and summarize employee and customer feedback to identify potential training needs.
• Maintain training manuals, testing materials, and multimedia learning resources.
• Apply modern instructional design techniques to improve training engagement and retention.
• Coordinate training schedules, onboarding logistics, and related communications.
• Initiate HR change forms when employees transition out of training or change status.
• Assist in identifying external training opportunities and provide recommendations to the Manager.
• Promote safety awareness and reinforce a strong safety culture through all training interactions

Safety & Compliance(40%):

• Support the consistent application of safety programs, policies, and procedures across KAT operations.
• Assist with implementing safety initiatives and monitoring compliance with established procedures.
• Conduct preliminary fact‑finding for safety‑related complaints, incidents, accidents, injuries, and damages.
• Document findings and provide information to the Safety & Training Manager for review and corrective action decisions.
• Maintain working knowledge of safety regulations and relay updates to the Manager as needed.
• Conduct periodic and random safety inspections and prepare clear, detailed reports.
• Participate in operator ride‑alongs, accident retraining sessions, and performance observations.
• Provide employees with guidance on safety practices and direct complex issues to the Manager.
• Assist with emergency response support activities as directed.

Records, Reporting, & Administrative Support (20%)

• Maintain accurate and complete records of employee, passenger, and vehicle incidents/accidents.
• Maintain safety and security documentation required for local, state, and federal reporting.
• Audit and ensure safety training records are current, accurate, and properly maintained.
• Prepare routine reports and communicate relevant information to Safety & Training leadership.
• Support program monitoring, reporting, and continuous improvement efforts by collecting and organizing data.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by Safety & Training leadership.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience
• Possess a valid Tennessee Class B CDL with Passenger Endorsement.
• Experience in training, safety, transportation, or a related field.

Military experience may be accepted in lieu of equivalent experience or education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in business, safety, education, transportation, or a related field.

Experience
• Experience in public transit, commercial driving, or fleet operations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), including spreadsheets and basic formulas.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentations.
• Ability to assist in developing policies, procedures, manuals, and business correspondence.
• Analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to evaluate data and summarize findings.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical documents, safety rules, and operational procedures.
• Knowledge of transit operations, applicable laws and regulations, and motor vehicle codes.
• Familiarity with Knoxville street systems, transit routes, traffic patterns, and weather‑related road impacts.
• Strong organizational, decision‑making, and multitasking abilities.
• Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with employees, leadership, and external partners.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic materials.
• Noise level is usually moderate but can occasionally be loud.
• Regularly works in outside weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock.
