At Knoxville Area Transit, our supervisors are an integral part of KAT’s daily operations. Their role is to communicate operational information to drivers, provide guidance and support, oversee daily transit performance, identify areas for improvement and implement solutions to ensure effective and safe customer-oriented service.
We are looking for an individual who values public transportation and the professional workforce necessary to support a comprehensive transportation system.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Communicate operational information to drivers while focusing on safety, customer service and punctuality; assign and direct work; ensure policies and procedures are communicated clearly; appraise performance; conduct effective corrective action discussions when needed
- Evaluate and monitor driver safety and performance, as well as compliance in legal, employment and labor policy matters
- Fill work assignments in accordance with the labor contract and maintain an appropriate level of available manpower
- Share in responsibility of implementing, communicating and working in accordance with KAT’s EEO policy and program
- Assign appropriate vehicles to each route. Reroute when necessary due to traffic and/or road conditions
- Maintain radio contact with operators and other supervisors, ensuring a consistent level of support and direction
- Record keeping duties:
- Document daily route variations because of a delay, breakdown, detour, etc. Escalate as necessary
- Prepare and log mileage from charter bus movement
- Dispatch office, platform and Road Supervisor reports
- Input and approve accurate operator time records
- Administer leave requests
- Maintain consistent documentation on accruals and attendance records
- Maintain effective communication and support with other departments within Operations and Administration
- Conduct accident investigations, restoration of interrupted service and assist with emergency response situations
- Demonstrate proficiency with current technology as well as willingness and aptitude to learn technology as it is introduced
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High School diploma, G.E.D. certificate
- Minimum of five years’ experience in a leadership/supervisory role, preferably in a union environment
- Demonstrated success in building effective relationships and methods of engagement with employees.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Value public transportation and the professional workforce necessary to support a comprehensive transportation system.
- Strong problem-solving skills and initiative to seek out and implement solutions to improve safety, service and support to the workforce.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Solid computer literacy with working knowledge of Word and Excel
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and written
- Ability to manage time effectively and effectively prioritize tasks
- Ability to adapt to changing situations and willingness to help in a variety of situations
- Ability to make quick decisions and work under pressure effectively
- Willingness to work extended hours and report to work on days off as needed
- Ability to obtain a CDL Class B with P endorsement
- Demostrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality, with ability to work additional time if needed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Frequently stand and walk; walk for long distances and on possible sloped ground or slippery and uneven surfaces; ability to sit regularly at times as well
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination
- Ability to lift material weighing up to 50 lbs. with assistance
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch
