JOB TITLE: Mechanic – Class “B”
SUPERVISOR: Maintenance Supervisor
JOB DESCRIPTION: Repair and maintain transit vehicles under the supervision of the Superintendent of Fleet or Maintenance Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform all duties and responsibilities of a Class “C” Mechanic.
Repairs all vehicles and specialized equipment, requiring minor and major adjustments to ensure a proper level of performance.
Diagnoses major tune-ups and engine overhauls to include gasoline and/or diesel engines.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections, services, and repairs.
Replaces, repairs, or overhauls fuel systems, including carburetors and fuel injection components.
Repairs or replaces electrical components such as starters, batteries, alternators, and gauges.
Performs brake overhauls on heavy-duty equipment.
Performs major installations of specialized equipment on vehicles, such as wiring components to existing systems.
Performs a variety of repairs on chassis, suspension systems, and drive train.
Uses welding equipment to make major repairs or fabricate metal parts.
Other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor or Superintendent of Fleet.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent, with one to two years of related experience or training, is preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The ability to operate all types of equipment owned and operated by the transit system.
A good knowledge of the streets and highways of Metropolitan Knoxville.
Minimum age of 21 years.
Must possess a valid State of Tennessee Commercial Drivers’ License, Class “B” with a passenger endorsement.
Must pass “B” mechanic test.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to perform in-depth diagnostics on vehicles. Ability to operate a variety of automatic diagnostic equipment. Ability to meet the certification and/or competency standards established for this position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee will occasionally be required to reach above the shoulders, below the waist, and reach from the waist to the shoulders.
The employee is occasionally required to talk or hear.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, the risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
