JOB DESCRIPTION:
Repair and maintain transit vehicles under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance or Maintenance Supervisor.
Salary: $23.94
Classification: Non-Exempt
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists maintenance technicians as needed when performing mechanical repairs
- Performs routine preventative maintenance such as oil changes or lubrication on all transit vehicles
- Replaces parts requiring no adjustments, such as cooling system belts and hoses, batteries and cables, and shocks and springs
- Performs brake overhauls
- Performs minor tune-ups
- Performs limited diagnostics on vehicles, such as engine performance, electrical, external fluid leaks, cooling system malfunctions, etc.
- Performs routine installation of specialised equipment to vehicles, such as component replacement or installation
- Uses welding equipment to make major repairs or fabricate metal parts
- Other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Manager, or Director of Maintenance
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent or equivalent graduation from a trade or vocation school
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- The ability to operate all types of equipment owned and operated by the transit system
- A good knowledge of the streets and highways of Metropolitan Knoxville
- Minimum age of 21 years
- Must possess a valid State of Tennessee Commercial Drivers’ License, Class “B” with passenger endorsement
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee will occasionally be required to reach above the shoulders, below the waist, and reach from the waist to the shoulder
- The employee is occasionally required to talk or hear
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The employee works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
