Veteran Resources

KAT is a proud recipient of the Tennessee Veteran Ready Gold Level Award, a recognition that reflects our ongoing commitment to Service Members, Veterans, and their Families. Veterans bring leadership, teamwork, and mission driven focus, and these strengths align directly with the work we do every day for the Knoxville community.

Our Commitment to Veterans

We proudly hire Veterans and value the dedication, discipline, and leadership they bring to our workforce. We encourage Veterans and transitioning service members to apply and are committed to supporting their continued career growth in the civilian workforce. A career in transit offers purpose, stability, and a team environment that feels familiar to many Veterans, with work centered on service to the community, operational excellence, and reliability.

Veterans Honor Program

For Veterans who are exploring whether a career in transit is the right next step, the Veterans Honor Program offers a four-week unpaid observational learning experience for external applicants who identify as part of the Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) community. Participants observe KAT operations, learn about transit career pathways, and gain insight into public service roles.

This program does not create employment status or employment rights and is not available to current employees.

Veterans Ready Practices

KAT maintains a strong public commitment to Veterans, actively recruits Veterans through community partnerships, provides resource navigation, and fosters a Veteran friendly workplace culture. We recognize military experience in place of certain education or experience requirements when appropriate, support Guard and Reserve members through paid military leave, and maintain programs that strengthen the transition from military service to civilian careers.

Veterans Benefits Summary

  • Paid military leave for eligible Guard and Reserve members
  • Support during activation and return to work
  • Access to counseling and support through the Employee Assistance Program
  • Military experience may be accepted in place of certain education or experience requirements when pursuing advancement opportunities or applying for internal positions
  • Access to the Veterans Employee Resource Group

Military Skills Translator

KAT uses a Military Occupational Code translator to help applicants understand how their military experience connects to civilian roles in transit. The translator helps you identify suitable roles, understand how your skills transfer, and prepare for conversations with HR and hiring managers.

Veterans Employee Resource Group (ERG)

The Veterans Employee Resource Group provides a space for employees with military experience to connect, share resources, and support one another. The group is led by Maurice Clark, who serves as the Veterans ERG Chair, and it regularly shares information about community events, veteran-serving organizations, and opportunities for involvement.

ESGR Statement of Support

KAT is a signatory to the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Statement of Support, reinforcing our commitment to employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve and to the families who support them. We maintain supportive practices for training, activation, and reintegration.
