“A” Mechanic

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Performs maintenance and repairs to all transit system vehicles and any other equipment operated by the transit system in the absence of supervision.
Salary: $28.16 hourly
Classification: Non-Exempt

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Performs difficult automotive and mechanical repairs requiring troubleshooting, diagnostics, and precision adjustments on all transit system vehicles and equipment.
• Performs preventive maintenance inspections, services, and repairs.
• At times, must work in the absence of supervision and be qualified and required to coordinate with dispatch and direct the work of other Mechanics and Service Personnel.
• Must possess a thorough knowledge of transit vehicles’ capabilities and limitations.
• Assists with safety and maintenance/repair training for peers and associates in lower classifications.
• Must possess thorough knowledge and perform maintenance and repair of transit vehicles and their major components, e.g., engine and engine components, transmission, other drive train components, brakes, multiplex systems, charging systems, other electrical systems, destination signs, fareboxes, AVL, camera security systems, air conditioning systems, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, fire suppression systems, hybrid drive systems, coolant systems, wheelchair lifts, wheelchair ramps, tires and rims, suspension and steering systems, and communications radio/equipment.
• May be required to perform minor welding repairs.Must possess a thorough knowledge and strong aptitude for utilizing computer-automated software and Internet resources in diagnosing vehicle major components.
• Must utilize maintenance management software in the performance of duties.
• Other duties and tasks as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor, Lead A Maintenance Manager, or Maintenance Director.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Must possess a high school diploma or a GED certificate or equivalent. Certificate or graduation from a technical or vocational school preferred. Must pass “A” Mechanic test.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• The ability to operate, repair and maintain all types of equipment owned and operated by the transit system.
• A good knowledge of the streets and highways of Metropolitan Knoxville.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other employees.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardization situations.
• Must possess a strong knowledge and aptitude in utilizing computer automation equipment and software.
• Must possess a valid State of Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License, Class “B” with a passenger endorsement.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb of balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee will occasionally be required to reach above the shoulders, below the waist, and reach waist to shoulder.
• The employee is occasionally required to talk or hear.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,  color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• The employee works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
